In the first part of this blog post series I wrote about the hack against user accounts on several popular sites like Facebook and Salesforce. I also mentioned that it’s easy to secure your own site from this problem by using a SSL certificate, so in this blog post I will show you how to setup a certificate from eXavier.com to encrypt your web site traffic (and protect your visitors from this hack).
First you need to buy a SSL certificate and it’s not expensive at all. The first SSL certificate I got (back in 1997) cost me about $200/year, but today you get the same SSL certificates for only $26.99/year at eXavier.com.
To buy the certificate is really easy and if you are the administrator of the domain name (in the whois database) you get the certificate almost immediately. You just place the order for the certificate you want, verify your details like for example reply to an automated phone call with a verification code and you’re ready to move on to the installation 😉
The installation process may differ depending on which type of server you are hosting your web site on, but eXavier.com got installation manuals for the most common servers available. In a few easy words you get a certificate (a text file with what looks like random letters and numbers) you need to paste somewhere in your web servers control panel.
When you have installed your certificate you just need to redirect your web traffic to your HTTPS site instead of the HTTP site, but that’s something for part 3 of this series 😉
HAHA This article is pretty funny. Love it!
It’s not meant to be funny. It’s meant for the reader to learn how to secure his or her blog/site which is a serious subject.
