Link baiting tips – part 2

Since the first post of link baiting tips became so popular it may be time for a second post with link baiting tips 🙂 .

For those of you who didn’t read the first post link baiting is when you got some content or feature on your site that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. Matt Cutts defined link bating as:

“interesting enough to catch people’s attention”

Tip 3: You do something and I follow

I guess you’ve all seen the “U drop, I follow”, “U comment, I follow”, “U spam, I follow” 😀 badges everywhere (you can almost find a badge like that in every blog). All the “U do, I follow” badges are actually just another link bait, since all people who would like to join your “movement” are asked to add a small badge (picture) with a link back to your site. So all you have to do is figure out a new “movement”.

Tip 4: Sponsor a contest

Become a sponsor of a contest in a popular blog 🙂 .This is kind of cheap advertising if the contest is held at a blog like TheUniversityKid.com. In the contest at TheUniversityKid.com people can get entries in the contest by writing a few words about the contest and including a list of all the prizes. The list of prizes include (of course) links to the sponsors 😀 . Since Xavier Media is one of the sponsors I’ve noticed at least 10 links as direct result from that contest. We sponsored 2000 Entrecard credits and so far we’ve got about 10 links (that we know off) which gets an average of 200 credits per link. Each one of these links will stay much longer then the usual one day when advertising on Entrecard so it’s really cheap advertising 🙂

Tip 5: Start your own contest

This is not a very creative tip due to the tip above, but I think it’s worth mentioning anyway. Start your own contest like TheUniversityKid.com did. You as the contest holder will get many more links to your site then all your sponsors will get. This thing requires a little bit more work then just being a sponsor, but you get a lot better results.
